The co-founder of Naughty Dog, Andrew Gavin, shared on LinkedIn how the company was acquired by Sony.
Andrew Gavin, co-founder of Naughty Dog, revealed on his LinkedIn profile why the company was acquired by Sony, the owner of PlayStation. The studio is known for hit games such as *The Last of Us* series and *Crash Bandicoot*.
According to the post, Naughty Dog was founded in 1980, and at that time, game development costs were “manageable,” and profits could be reinvested into future games.
“In 2004, the cost of AAA games like *Jak 3* had already risen to $45-50 million, and since then, it has continued to increase,” Gavin commented.
“Selling to Sony wasn’t just about securing Naughty Dog’s financial future. It was about giving the studio the resources it needed to continue creating the best possible games, without being crushed by rising costs and the paralyzing fear that a single mistake could ruin everything,” the co-founder confessed.
Today, Gavin believes it was the right decision. The company announced its new game, *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*, at The Game Awards 2024.
In addition to games, the studio has been involved in developing TV series based on its franchises, such as the second season of *The Last of Us*, which now has a premiere date set for April 2025.
